BASILAR JOINT ARTHRITIS – CAUSE AND EFFECTS

Arthritis is the result of cartilage wear in your joints. This cartilage provides a smooth gliding surface for your joints to move painlessly. As we age, the cartilage breaks down leading to bone rubbing on bone. This results in inflammation and joint destruction leading to pain with motion. As the arthritis worsens, strength is decreased, motion becomes limited and swelling may occur.

BASILAR JOINT ARTHRITIS – TREATMENT

Significant improvement can be obtained with non-surgical treatments. In a majority of patients, anti-inflammatories, nighttime splinting and intermittent steroid injections can decrease swelling and improve pain. In those patients who fall to respond to non-operative treatments, surgery may be recommended.
