If you have pain, numbness and tingling in the forearm, hand, and/or fingers you may have Cubital Tunnel Syndrome. It is caused by compression of the ulnar nerve as it passes around the bony prominence on the medial part of the elbow (“Funny Bone”).  Salem plastic surgeons Dr. Keith C. Neaman and Dr. Dustin Christiansen have extensive training and experience in the treatment of Cubital Tunnel Syndrome. To schedule your personal consultation, please call Neaman Plastic Surgery at 844-338-5445; left untreated, permanent dysfunction of the hand and fingers may result.

CUBITAL TUNNEL SYNDROME – CAUSE AND EFFECTS

There are several common causes of compression of the ulnar nerve as it passes around the elbow. The medial aspect of the elbow has very little padding making the nerve susceptible to compression. This compression is worse with prolonged periods of bending the elbow. Additionally, the tissues surrounding the nerve may become thickened causing pressure on the nerve as well. As the nerve is compressed is ceases to function properly causing numbness, tingling and pain.

CUBITAL TUNNEL SYNDROME – TREATMENT

Often electromyography (EMG) and/or nerve conduction studies (NCS) are required to make the diagnosis. If compression of the nerve is minimal then treatment consists of non-operative measures such as elbow padding and avoiding positions where the elbow is flexed for prolonged periods of time. For those patients with severe compression surgical intervention may be recommended. Release of the cubital tunnel is usually performed as an outpatient and does not require an overnight stay in the hospital.
