If you have progressive bending of your fingers or rope-like cords in your palm you may have Dupuytren’s disease. Initially, Dupuytren’s disease may present as painless lumps in the palm or dimpling of the skin which is called pitting. Eventually, cords may develop which progressively tighten, pulling the finger into the palm.

The cause of Dupuytren’s disease is unknown. Often times it runs in the family and has a high prevalence in those with ancestors form northern Europe. This association has Dupuytren’s disease frequently being called the Viking’s disease. It is more common in men than women and usually presents in those over the age of 50 years old.
Dupuytren’s diseaes tends to be a progressive disease the may initially present as lumps or nodules in the palm. Slowly it may progress into the development of a cord. These are rope like collections of collagen that extend from the finger into the palm. As these cords tighten they may pull the finger into the palm causing a contracture. Usually the inability to lay one’s hand flat on the table is a good indication for intervention.
Over the past decade the treatment of Dupuytren’s disease has drastically changed. In a majority of cases surgical excision has been replaced by the use of Xiaflex, a drug that dissolves the diseased tissue allowing the finger to straighten. This avoids all of the downtime associated with surgical excision and allows immediate correction of the deformity in a majority of cases. Additionally, percutaneous releases may be performed in the office decreasing the cost and morbidity of surgical excision.
