Gynecomastia is a condition where men experience abnormal breast development often due to age, weight gain, genetics or a hormonal imbalance. It affects approximately 40 to 60 percent of males and can be extremely embarrassing causing many men and adolescents to become self-conscious. Gynecomastia surgery, or male breast reduction, removes excess fat, skin, and breast tissue in the chest region to achieve a more masculine silhouette. Salem plastic surgeons Dr. Keith Neaman and Dr. Dustin Christiansen of Neaman Plastic Surgery are proud to offer male breast reduction for men and teens who suffer from gynecomastia or enlarged breasts. Gynecomastia, commonly referred to as “man boobs,” can occur in one or both breasts and is characterized by excess fat and glandular tissue around the breast. Most of the time, the fat is localized; however, in some more severe cases, the excess breast tissue can result in the breasts sagging or hanging downward. Gynecomastia is a common condition that typically peaks during puberty. And while gynecomastia usually resolves itself with age, it can persist into adulthood and even worsen. When this is the case, gynecomastia rarely responds to lifestyle changes such as increased exercise and following a healthy diet.
Common causes of gynecomastia include:
Male breast reduction is a fairly simple procedure. There are a few different methods to perform gynecomastia which is dependent on your individual body type and the amount of fatty tissue to be removed. Sometimes gynecomastia surgery can be as simple as just performing liposuction on the chest region. Other times, it is performed under general anesthesia in which a small incision is made under the arm or at the edge of the areola. This helps to keep scarring to a minimum. Through the incision, underlying fat and glandular tissue are removed. Any extra skin is excised before incision sites are closed.
Male breast reduction can relieve the pain associated with gynecomastia and help you regain a more masculine, natural-looking appearance. See gynecomastia before/after photos*. Male breast reduction can achieve the following:
Ideal candidates for male breast reduction are males over the age of 18 who have extra breast tissue that is creating the appearance of having breasts. Surgery can be performed on younger boys, but it is important to remember that during puberty, temporary abnormal breast development is natural and may subside on its own. The root cause of gynecomastia should be addressed and as well as whether surgery can be avoided by altering lifestyle choices or medications. Candidates should be in good health and have realistic expectations for the body contouring treatment.
