Facts on Fillers…What’s Best For Me?

Dermal injectable fillers, you’ve heard of them, seen people at the medical day spa that have used them, now it’s your turn. But with the many different types of injectables out there, how do you know which is right for you?

The four most commonly used fillers include Restylane, Juvederm, Perlane, and Radiesse. Of course, at any given time you will hear if a new “magical” injectable is on the market. But, thus far, these are the likely four that will be offered to you at the dermatology office or medical day spa you visit.

Restylane, Juvederm and Perlane all are hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers. This (HA) is a natural compound composed of sugar naturally found in all organisms. When it is injected, the molecules of the HA draw in water, causing the tissue beneath to swell, providing volume and fullness to the skin. There is no danger of allergic reaction, as they are composed of biodegradable non animal HA.

Radiesse, however, is a bit different; it is composed of tiny crystals that contain calcium hydroxyapatite, a substance found in teeth and bone. It is manufactured synthetically and here, too, there is no risk of allergy.

Restylane

This dermal filler works best on Nasolabial folds, smile lines, wrinkles on the forehead, hollows beneath the eyes and plumping lips. You will have numbing cream applied prior to your injection, but may experience some moderate pain, especially in the lip area. Normally, the results lasts about 6 months.

Juvederm

Juvederm works best on moderate to severe wrinkles and folds. The formulation Juvederm XC contains lidocaine, which numbs the treatment area for a more comfortable injection. Normally this product lasts up to a year.

Perlane

Perlane is primarily used for deeper injections, such as cheeks, chin, eyebrows and deeper crevices around the mouth area.
Generally, Perlane lasts up to a year, but some areas can last longer than others. A deep cheek injection, that doesn’t move much, will last longer than an area in constant motion, such as smile lines.

Radiesse

This product boasts an increase in “collagenesis”, a process whereby it stimulates collagen growth in the body near the injection site. Radiesse works best on marionette lines, smile lines and jowls and usually lasts up to a year.

As you can see the choices are out there and dermal injectable fillers are here to stay. While the cost varies in different areas, the most important thing to remember is the product is only as good as the injector. If a product is injected into the wrong area, you will not get the results you are hoping for.
