The most commonly fractured bone is the radius. This may result in swelling, pain and decreased range of motion. When larger bones are injured the wrist may appear deformed. Sometimes smaller bones of the wrist such as the Scaphoid may be fractured. The external changes such as swelling are generally less. However, it may result in pain with motion of the wrist.
Diagnosis is usually confirmed with an x-ray. Treatment depends on which bone is fractured and the whether the bones are out of place or not. Various other things are considered including age, overall health, hand dominance, and occupation. Occasionally splints or casts are used to treat non-displaced fractures. Other times, the fracture must be stabilized with the use of screw, plates or pins.
During your recover motion of the fingers are important to prevent stiffness. Recovery times and outcomes vary depending on the severity of the injury and numerous other fractures. Persistent stiffness may require a visit with a hand therapist to work on flexibility, strength and function.
