Scar Treatment Packages
When should I start using scar gel or silicone strips after surgery?
Begin using Silagen Gel when the wound has healed or sutures have been removed. Do not apply to any open wound.
How long should I use scar gel or silicone strips for optimal results?
Silagen gel and sheeting are formulated to be worn 6–12 hours per day. The more time Silagen is in contact with the scar, the greater the results. Remove at least every 12 hours to inspect the site and allow the skin to be washed and thoroughly dried before reapplying.
Are these scar products safe for all skin types?
Yes. Silagen products are made with specially formulated medical-grade silicone designed to be non-toxic and non-irritating. They are safe for children and adults and for all skin types. The silicone is bio-compatible and does not absorb into the skin—it forms a protective barrier on the surface.
Will scar gel help with older scars or only new ones?
Yes. Clinical studies show silicone sheeting and gel can improve many older red and raised scars. In general, the sooner the products are applied after the scar has formed, the better the expected results.
Can I use both scar gel and silicone strips at the same time?
Silagen gel and strips provide similar results; there’s usually no need to use them simultaneously. For hypertrophic (raised) scars, start with sheeting for added compression. For example, after tummy tuck procedures a patient may use sheeting during the day and gel at night.
What’s the difference between silicone strips and scar gel?
Silicone sheeting/strips and silicone gel have comparable efficacy. Keloid or hypertrophic scars may respond best by starting with sheeting, then transitioning to gel as the scar flattens.
Do I need a prescription for these products?
No prescription is required. These are exclusive medical-grade products available for purchase from your provider.
Are the results permanent, or will I need to keep reapplying?
Use Silagen until you stop seeing improvement; typical total treatment time is about 3 months (may vary by scar and location).
How should I store the products?
Store in a cool, dry place. Avoid high heat or freezing temperatures.
When should I start using SkinMedica Scar Recovery Gel after surgery?
Begin once the Steri-Strips have come off or external stitches have been removed, the scar has healed over and there are no longer any scabs. Typically this will be 4-6 weeks after surgery. Do not apply to any open wound.
How long should I use SkinMedica Scar Recovery Gel for optimal results?
Continue using the scar gel until you are satisfied with the appearance of your scar. This may take a few months of daily use.
How often should I apply scar gel?
Apply twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening.
Always follow your provider’s post-procedure instructions. If irritation occurs, discontinue use and contact your provider.
Silagen Clean Foaming Cleanser Kit FAQs
What is the Silagen Clean Foaming Cleanser used for?
This cleanser is for maintaining Silagen sheeting/strips. Regular cleaning helps preserve tackiness and can extend use to 2–4 weeks per strip with proper care. Care instructions are included with all products.
Can I use this cleanser on my surgical incision?
We do not recommend using the cleanser directly on surgical incisions.
How often should I use the foaming cleanser post-op?
Use to clean the Silagen silicone strips every 1-2 days. It is not intended for skin cleansing.
Silagen Silicone Strips
What size silicone strip should I use for my scar?
Enough to cover the length of the scar. Our scar treatment packages are tailored to include the right about of Silagen silicone strips to cover the typical length of incisions.
Can the strips be cut to fit my scar?
Yes. All Silagen sheeting and shapes can be trimmed to fit.
How long can I wear the silicone strips each day?
Wear 10-16 hours per day. Remove once a day (when you shower) to inspect the stie and allow the skin to be washed and thoroughly dried.
How many times can I reuse one strip?
With proper maintenance, each strip/sheet can be reused for 2–4 weeks.
How do I clean and store the silicone strips?
Wash the strips every 1-2 days. Wet the strip with warm tap water and use the Silagen CLEAN Foaming Cleanser (or a mild soap with no added moisturizers) to wash away any dirt or body oils. Rinse thoroughly to remove all the cleanser and then allow to air dry. The Silagen CLEAN Foaming Cleanser is specially formulated to maintain the stickiness of the silicone strips so that they can be re-used for longer. Use the provided clamshell tray to hold strips while drying and for storage. Once dry, put the clear liner on the strip while storing.
Can I shower or sweat while wearing the strips?
The strips should be removed when showering and exercising. Make sure to clean and dry the skin well before putting the strips back on.
Will the strips stay in place if I’m active?
Adherence depends on location. Areas that bend frequently (e.g., elbows, knees) can be challenging—gel may be a better option there.
Can I use the strip under clothes or a compression garment?
Yes, strips may be worn under clothing or a compression garment.
What are the benefits of using Silagen silicone strips?
Clinical studies of silicone gel sheeting demonstrate that they are able to flatten and soften scars, as well as improve redness, itching and pain. They have also been shown to help speed up the improvement in appearance compared to untreated scars.
When should I start using silicone strips after surgery?
Begin once the Steri-Strips have come off, the scar has healed over and there are no longer any scabs. Typically this will be 4-6 weeks after surgery. Do not apply to any open wound.
How long should I use scar gel or silicone strips for optimal results?
To achieve optimal results, Silagen silicone strips should be worn daily for 10-16 hours for a minimum of 12 weeks. The more time the strips are in contact with the scar, the greater the results.
What's the difference between silicone strips and SkinMedica Scar Recovery Gel?
They have comparable efficacy at improving the appearance of scars. Silicone strips are the gold standard in scar treatment as they have the added benefit of helping to prevent hypertrophic or keloid scars. Scar gel is a great option for scars that are in a location that would be difficult to apply silicone strips.
